The Copper Mines Walk
We will meet at the Old Creamery Coffee Shop at 9:00 – 9:30 am. Heading off up the Goats Path with a stop off at the ancient Ardahill Ring Fort and to the top of the path. We then hit the trail proper, heading west along Peakeen Ridge taking time to reflect at the Passage Tomb.
Onward then to the summit of Caher Mountain at 338 metres and Peakeen Junction. Decending down the ridge, we head along the north side of the peninsula passing through an old cluster of ruined houses. From there we walk to the Gortavallig Copper Mines and its ruined miners cottages and mine shafts.
* Please note that on this part of the walk we have to cross a narrow exposed path. It has a rope hand rail to assist you.*
Continuing on to the Cove, going via the Poet's Way and the Marriage Stone; a most interesting monument to speculate over! Homeward bound, we set off down to the coastal path which takes us through Tra Ruian Quay, Caher and its famine burial ground and Dooneen Pier. We will pass the White House Gallery and Coffee Shop which is a lovely place for a coffee and look around. Lastly we'll go past the ruined church of St Chrochain (Kilcrohane), the Standing Stones and eventually back to base.
